Hiking Ridge Hill: Fairyland of the Beautiful and Bizarre

Enjoy a leisurely hike paired with a history lesson, all while being guided along four miles of gentle walking trails that pass notable sites in Wellesley and Needham. We'll meet at the Beard Trail, then head to the North Trail, and continue to Ridge Hill Reservation where we'll explore what's left of the famous Baker Estate of the late 1800s. Built by the wealthy eccentric sewing machine magnate, William Baker's estate comprised 800 acres of railroad, a 159-room hotel, gardens, artificial lakes with boating, grottos, and a menagerie of domestic and wild animals. After lunch we'll return to the Wellesley trail system and explore the Waban Arches, a structure consisting of nine stone arches each 40 feet in height that was once part of the 17.4 mile system of underground tunnels and waterways that brought clean water to Boston. At Sudbury Path, where we'll be on the lookout for red fox and deer tracks, we will tour the Guernsey Sanctuary and Lake Sabrina. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a water bottle and bag lunch. Directions will be sent upon registration.

Course Code: T263 Sec. 01: 1 Saturday, 11:00 am-3:00 pm. September 22, meet at Beard Way off Grove Street, Wellesley, MA, $40.
