Great cities are critical to a sustainable future, and great neighborhoods are critical to sustainable cities.  Just like wildlife habitat, people habitat requires a healthy ecology of neighborhood components working together, from homes to shops and services, from walkable streets to places of respite.  Let's talk about how to make it happen.

Kaid Benfield is director of sustainable communities at the Natural Resources Defense Council in Washington, DC.  He works on solutions to environmental challenges where Americans live, work, and play while teaching regional planning and sustainable development practices at the George Washington University School of Law.
