Scaling the Heights: From Foot of the Rocks Park to Menotomy Rocks Park
Dear Members and Friends of Walking In Arlington
Walking In Arlington and the Old Schwamb Mill are cosponsoring a historical walk led by Ed Gordon on Saturday November 3rd at 9am. We will be braving some of Arlington's steeper hills for "Scaling the Heights: From Foot of the Rocks Park to Menotomy Rocks Park". Register and pay by November 1st to save a spot.
During this walk we’ll seek out the once lonely out posts of Lockes, Prentisses and Craigins. These mid 19th century farm houses are now the oldest buildings within streetscapes rich in Queen Anne, Cape, Craftsman and Bungalow houses. As always, we will learn about social and economic history, and historic business, commerce and transportation, as well as architecture.
We’ll view sites associated with the Robbins family’s late Victorian era seasonal resort and spring water business, view a fine public school building from the turn of the 20th century, and get more exercise then we generally do during these walks - comfortable foot wear is a must! We’ll end the tour at the 36 acre Menotomy Rocks Park which was created during the mid 1890's on part of the George Hill Farm.
The walk will last about 2 hours, and will be held rain or shine. Please dress for the weather. The route will include hills. The tour is not suitable for children under 10 or dogs. Older children are welcome. The group is limited to 40 people. The meeting point will be sent to pre-registered participants only.
The cost of the tour is $15 per person, and reservations are required. Make checks payable to Walking In Arlington. Proceeds go to the pedestrian advocacy work of Walking in Arlington, and the historic preservation work of the Old Schwamb Mill.
Postal mail your registration by November 1st to Walking In Arlington, 65 Randolph Street, Arlington, MA, 02474. Please include your e-mail address and telephone number with your registration. Thank you.
Yours On Foot
